SudanDefenders May 2026 Newsletter

Greetings,

SudanDefenders is pleased to present the May 2026 edition of the Sudan Defenders newsletter, issued at a critical time as Sudan continues to face one of the most severe humanitarian and human rights crises in its modern history. This edition highlights escalating violations against human rights defenders, including arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and increasing restrictions on civic space.

We also provide documentation on systematic patterns of targeting journalists, lawyers, humanitarian workers, and women human rights defenders. The newsletter also provides analysis of key cases, an overview of regional risk levels, and highlights the growing challenges to accountability, justice, and protection mechanisms in Sudan.

This issue also highlights important regional and international developments, including the Banjul  Joint Declaration on Sudan, which calls for the protection of civilians, accountability for violations, and strengthened humanitarian access.

In addition, the newsletter celebrates the resilience and global recognition of Sudanese human rights defenders, while honouring the legacy of the late Najla Ahmed Al-Mahi, whose contributions continue to inspire the movement.

We warmly invite you to read both the English and Arabic versions of the newsletter for detailed insights, documentation, and analysis.
