Who We Are

SudanDefenders is a coalition and network of Sudanese Human Rights Defenders (HRDs) dedicated to promoting and protecting human rights defenders across Sudan. It was established on June 10, 2022, with 28 individuals and organizations adopting the Kampala Declaration to guide its mission. SudanDefenders is hosted by DefendDefenders, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders organization, and is part of the broader Pan-African and East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders networks.
The coalition operates under an Executive Committee elected annually by its General Assembly and overseen by a Board of Directors.
SudanDefenders’ main focus is on protection, advocacy, documentation, capacity building, and the well-being of HRDs, especially those working in conflict zones affected by the ongoing military conflict in Sudan that escalated significantly in 2023. Their work includes strategic planning, adopting internal policies, and maintaining coordination with DefendDefenders and AfricanDefenders to strengthen their protection efforts.
