The Sudan Defenders Coalition is pleased to release the April 2026 edition of its Monthly Newsletter, available in both English and Arabic.
The April 2026 issue is released at a crucial point as Sudan’s conflict reaches its fourth year, characterised by increasing human rights abuses, worsening humanitarian crisis, and widespread impunity. The newsletter highlights a quickly worsening situation where civilians and human rights defenders are at serious risk of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, torture, unfair trials, and targeted killings.
The newsletter highlights a systematic pattern of repression across Sudan, where legal frameworks and judicial systems are increasingly used to silence dissent and criminalise human rights work. Multiple case studies illustrate this trend, including the prosecution of lawyers, journalists, academics, and humanitarian workers under charges that often carry severe penalties, including death sentences.
Particular concern is raised over the targeting of women human rights defenders, prolonged arbitrary detentions, restrictions on civic space, and the use of violence and intimidation by various actors, including state authorities, armed groups, and non-state forces. Violations are documented across multiple regions, reflecting a nationwide pattern rather than isolated incidents.
Despite these challenges, Sudanese human rights defenders continue to operate with resilience, documenting violations and advocating for accountability. The newsletter also covers SudanDefenders’ ongoing activities, including policy dialogues, regional cooperation, and institutional strengthening efforts aimed at improving protection mechanisms and advancing human rights advocacy.
At the international level, responses remain mixed. While global actors have expressed concern, imposed sanctions, and pledged humanitarian support, political divisions and limited enforcement have hindered meaningful progress toward accountability and peace.
SudanDefenders calls for the immediate cessation of violations, protection of civilians and defenders, judicial independence, and strengthened accountability mechanisms. We emphasise the urgent need for coordinated national, regional, and international action to end impunity and support a just and sustainable peace in Sudan.
