The SudanDefenders July 2026 edition offers a comprehensive overview of the worsening human rights situation in Sudan and the increasing challenges faced by Sudanese refugees across the region. The newsletter emphasises an unprecedented rise in violations targeting human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, humanitarian workers, and civil society actors amid ongoing armed conflict and shrinking civic space.
This issue documents troubling patterns of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, politically motivated prosecutions, and restrictions on freedom of expression. It raises particular concern over the collective prosecution of 47 journalists in Port Sudan, the continued detention of numerous human rights defenders, and the systematic targeting of women defenders and journalists in Darfur. The newsletter also records serious abuses against humanitarian workers and community leaders, reflecting a broader pattern of repression against those working to defend human rights and assist affected communities.
The newsletter further examines the deteriorating humanitarian and protection environment for Sudanese refugees in Chad, Egypt, Libya, Uganda, and Ethiopia. It highlights challenges such as sexual exploitation, mass arrests, deportation risks, bureaucratic barriers to legal protection, gender-based violence, and limited access to essential services.

These efforts demonstrate rising international attention to serious violations, including allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity, sexual violence, and attacks against civilians.
The issue also underscores SudanDefenders’ ongoing initiatives to enhance the protection and capacity of human rights defenders through training, advocacy, documentation, and engagement with regional and international mechanisms.
