The Sudan Defenders June Newsletter documents the continued deterioration of the human rights environment in Sudan, with an intensified pattern of violations targeting human rights defenders, journalists, lawyers, humanitarian workers, civil society actors, and religious leaders. As Sudan’s conflict enters its fourth year, attacks against civic actors have become increasingly systematic, reflecting efforts by parties to the conflict to suppress independent voices, restrict civic space, and undermine accountability.
During June, Sudan Defenders documented 28 cases of human rights violations across 12 Sudanese states and monitored the security situation of Sudanese human rights defenders in Uganda, Chad, Libya, and Egypt. The documented violations include arbitrary arrests, prolonged detention without trial, enforced disappearances, torture, politically motivated prosecutions, restrictions on humanitarian work, attacks on journalists, and killings of humanitarian workers and religious figures. The newsletter also highlights growing risks faced by Sudanese defenders in exile, including hate speech, intimidation, and protection challenges in neighbouring countries.
At the international level, June saw increased attention to Sudan’s human rights crisis. The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission reaffirmed that arbitrary detention, enforced disappearance, and torture have become systematic tools used by parties to the conflict, while the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights continued to raise alarm over widespread conflict-related sexual violence. The European Union, United Kingdom, United States, and other international partners renewed calls for accountability, civilian protection, and cooperation with international investigative mechanisms.
Despite the deteriorating environment, our newsletter also documents important positive developments. Several human rights defenders and civilians secured judicial acquittals following sustained legal advocacy and public campaigning, demonstrating that coordinated documentation, advocacy, and international pressure continue to produce tangible results. In addition, Sudanese journalists received multiple international awards recognising their courageous reporting and continued documentation of violations despite extreme risks.
Sudan Defenders calls upon all parties to the conflict, Sudanese judicial authorities, the United Nations, regional organisations, donor governments, and humanitarian actors to strengthen protection mechanisms, end arbitrary detention, ensure accountability for violations, expand support for Sudanese civil society, and protect those who continue to defend human rights under extraordinarily dangerous conditions.
