SudanDefenders March 2026 Newsletter

Greetings,

The Sudan Defenders Coalition is pleased to release the March 2026 edition of its Monthly Newsletter, now available in both English and Arabic.

The March 2026 newsletter highlights the deepening human rights crisis in Sudan as the armed conflict enters its third year. Against a backdrop of collapsing state institutions, widespread impunity, and shrinking civic space, the report underscores the escalating and systematic targeting of human rights defenders, journalists, and civil society actors.

A central focus of this issue is the disproportionate impact of the conflict on women, particularly women human rights defenders, who face compounded risks including gender-based violence, arbitrary detention, and exclusion from decision-making processes. Despite these challenges, Sudanese women continue to play a critical role in community resilience, humanitarian response, and advocacy for justice and peace.

In parallel, the report highlights a severe crackdown on civic space, marked by the closure of civil society organisations, restrictions on humanitarian operations, and increased control over both local and international actors. These measures have significantly hindered the delivery of essential services and humanitarian aid.

Despite the deteriorating situation, the newsletter also showcases Sudanese resilience and global recognition of Sudanese human rights defenders, journalists, and grassroots initiatives. Several individuals and organisations received international awards, reflecting their courage and continued commitment to documenting violations and supporting affected communities.

Institutionally, Sudan Defenders held its annual retreat, which focused on progress in strengthening its governance structures, expanding regional cooperation, and advancing its strategic framework for 2026–2031.
